The Poto-Poto art school was founded in the Poto-Poto district of Brazzaville by Pierre Lods in 1951.

It includes internationally renowned painters such as Joseph Dimi, Marcel Gotène, François Thango, François Iloki, Philippe Ouassa, Nicolas Ondongo, Jacques Zigoma, Eugène Malonga, André M'Bon and Michel Hengo.

The recognition of the school quickly crossed the borders of the Congo. The first collective exhibition took place in 1952 at the Palmes gallery in Paris. The consecration took place in 1955-1956 during the exhibition at MoMA in New York. It was confirmed in 1958, when Lods sent several members to represent the Poto-Poto school at the World Exhibition in Brussels.

In 2014, the Centre national d'art et de culture Georges Pompidou - Beaubourg de Paris exhibited the masterpieces of Marcel Gotene (Gouache sur toile sans titre), Nicolas Ondongo (Marché en AEF) and Jacques Zigoma (Retour du Marché) as part of the exhibition "From one bank to the other".
